Comprehension of Metaphors by Typically Developing Arabic-Speaking Jordanian School Children

This paper reports on the findings of a study investigating comprehension Arabic metaphors by Jordanian school children. Thirty typically developing children aged 6, 8 and 10 years old performed metaphor verbal task based lexicalized metaphorical expressions incorporated into short stories. Each story ends with target expression is followed question about identifying referent expression. The results show that were better at comprehending than young concludes develops significantly chronological age. Furthermore, degree child’s familiarity given plays crucial role in influencing metaphors.
